Leadership Philosophy Statement

I take the topic of leadership very seriously and have developed my philosophy taking in to consideration all of the various inputs I have received relative to leadership. I have seriously considered the following:

  • My fundamental beliefs about people as productive or unproductive members of society in whatever role they are playing
  • My personal core values
  • My life experiences from birth until now
  • My exposure to leaders who exhibited characteristics and behaviors that I liked
  • My exposure to leaders who exhibited characteristics and behaviors that I didn?t like
  • My observations of my own characteristics and behaviors as a leader that I noticed did or did not get good results as well as how they made me feel
  • My reading and study about the topic of leadership

The net result of the above supports this leadership philosophy statement and what I would share with my direct reports, boss, peers or anyone that is interested. I have positioned my statement to reflect a one on one meeting between my direct reports and me where I am sharing my philosophy

My Sample Leadership Philosophy Statement

As your leader I take my responsibility seriously. I have spent a great deal of time thinking about what leadership is and more importantly what it means to me and I want to share it with you.

As your leader you can expect me to support you in every way I can to help you be as successful as you want to be. I will make every effort to assure you have all the tools you need to be able to do your job with excellence. These tools are not only the physical tools, like desk, chair, computer, etc. but perhaps more importantly include information, communication and clear complete information when I have the opportunity to delegate work to you. I will do whatever I can to support your career growth including sharing what I have learned as I have traveled my career path. I will do everything I can to share with you any and all information I receive that you may not have easy access to. I want us to have an environment of no secrets and no hidden agendas. With me, what you see is what you get. I want us to have open communication and it is clear to me that I don?t have all the answers and will always be open to a different viewpoint and new ideas. You can expect me to require you to be the best you can be and I will stay out of your way as much as I can. I will never micromanage you or abdicate my responsibilities, I will follow up as appropriate. I do not accept that ok is good enough and will always be looking for a better more productive way to serve our clients. I will keep you informed about how you are performing on a regular basis, help you get back on track if you fall off ,and I will show my appreciation for excellence on a regular basis when I see it.

In summary, I have your back, want to support your success, as defined by you, expect excellence and want us as a team to make a real difference in the success of our organization and never accept that ok is good enough.

As your leader I expect you to show up every day ready to do your best work. I expect you to make an effort to do your best work all the time. I expect open and honest communication from you. If there is something you need I want to be informed so I can help if possible. I expect you to always be looking for a better more productive way to do your job. I want to know your career aspirations so I can help you if possible. I want to understand any frustrations you have so we can work together to eliminate or at least reduce them. I expect you to be proactive and bring your ideas. I expect you to be a good team player bringing your best self to collaborative efforts. I expect you to speak up when you have something to say. I expect you to complete assignments on time and achieve your agreed goals. If there is ever something in the way keeping you from completing an assignment or meeting a goal on the agreed deadline I expect you to let me know early that you are having a challenge so I can help you or we may be able to adjust the deadline. I expect you to think beyond your current responsibility always looking for ways our overall organization can become better.

Last but not least I expect you to let me know if you observe me behaving in a manner that is contrary to my shared leadership philosophy or counterproductive to us achieving our mutual goals. I have a desire to get better all the time as a leader and you are in a great position? to help me with that, please don?t ever hesitate to let me know when I am slipping or have slipped off track.
